In late 2010 a group of slightly deranged would be Tour De France cyclists decided riding from John O Groats to Lands End (JOGLE) would be a good use of nine days in August.

The group is

Mark Cheetham, Miles Drew, Ian Fretwell, Mark Hendricks, Chris Holmes, Matthew McDermott, Brendan McNallen, Phil Pearson and Dean Radford

As well as this hopefully being a fun (albeit painful) “roadtrip”, there is a serious cause at the heart of what we are doing.  We are aiming to raise awareness and funds for Brain Tumour UK, (BTUK) in the memory of Lee Wilkinson.

Lee passed away on 21 September 2009 after a 3 year fight with a brain tumour.  Lee was a larger than life character and his passing has deeply affected a lot of people.  Lee left his wife and two children.  If you have the time please visit Lee’s memorial page at lee.wilkinson.muchloved.com to read all about his battle and also the fundraising activities completed so far by friends and colleagues that have raised c.£5000 in little over a year.

We are hoping this event which will see us cycle end to end close to 1000 miles over nine consecutive days will be another fitting tribute to Lee and raise much needed awareness and funds for Brain Tumour Uk. 

Brain Tumour UK is the UK’s leading, caring charity committed to fighting brain tumours by providing support, funding research and raising awareness.

I have now been training for four months now:

Training has consisted of, getting as many road miles in as possible, high usage of my turbo trainer for high intensity works, trying to maintain a constant speed of 20 – 25 mph for as long as possible finishing off with a sprint in top gear, raching a max speed of 40mph over a distance of one mile, this does cause the quads to burn a bit, but apparantly is good for the twitch muscle.

I have been taking part in a weekly spinning class, again high intensity work to build up the strength in my legs and improve my cv system, spinning is crazy for crazy people but strangley enjoyable.

This is follwed by 2 2 1/2 hour gym sessions, which comprises of:

Rowing – 5 mins, cross trainer (cross country setting level 16) – 15 mins, cycle (cross country setting level 20) – 30 mins.

All of the above gets my heart rate up into the 170’s.

This is followed by, lat pull downs, leg press, leg curl, leg extension, calf extension, ab crunches, chest press, triceps and chest press all designed to build up core strength, and doing high reps for stamina.

This is followed by another 20 mins on the bike, (cross country setting level 18)

All topped off with lots of stretching.
